When Henrietta’s Kamryn Weaver thundered down a kill to give the Bearcats game four on Tuesday night, it was gut-check time for the Bowie High School volleyball team.
The Lady Rabbits weren’t to be denied, taking the fifth set and winning the match by scores of 12-25, 25-23, 25-21, 23-25, 15-11.
Bowie improved to 20-13 overall, 5-3 in District 3A-9.
Speaking of the district race, it has gotten tighter at the top with Henrietta at 7-1, Holliday lost to Boyd – dropping to 6-2 – and Bowie, Nocona and Boyd are all 5-3.
“The top-five teams in this district are so close to each other,” Henrietta head coach Rachelle Kabisch said. “We knew it would be hard for anyone to go through district undefeated. This makes the district closer, and makes our job harder.”
Meanwhile, Bowie head coach Jeannie Stark called it an opening for the Lady Rabbits to potentially claim a playoff spot.
“I couldn’t be any prouder of the girls,” Stark said. “After a slow start, we turned it on and began to execute. I felt our blocking in set two played a big role in our comeback.”
Stark said Henrietta plays a controlled style – with Weaver a powerful hitter for the Lady Bearcats.
“We had a plan, and the girls executed it after set one,” Stark said. “We began to control the ball, move the sets around, blocked, dug balls, and hit spots we knew would be open. It was a total team win.”
Bowie won the match because they recorded 13 ace blocks as a team, and the Lady Rabbits made good on 99-of-100 serves. Read more, and see district standings, in the weekend Bowie News.

Nocona got its new press box into place this week at Jack Crane Stadium. The old press box, which was in place for more than 60 years, was taken out in early June and moved to Indian Valley Raceway. The new press box was by the Southern Bleacher Company out of Graham. Athletic Director Black Crutsinger said they looked at a lot of press boxes and decided they liked the one at Lindsay High School and went with that model. Sean Hutson operated the crane from the Hurd Crane Service that put the press box up for Nocona.
