HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Bowie splits games at invitational

The Bowie High School boys’ basketball team is a work in progress.
That was on display during Thursday’s Bowie Invitational tournament action as the Jackrabbits smacked Azle 66-57, but then suffered a 46-30 loss to Braemar College.
Braemar is a traveling team visiting from the Australian state of Victoria.
Bowie head boys’ basketball coach Doug Boxell said the team is still searching for the right formula for success, and that includes having the right combination of players on the floor.
“We have been a little slow out of football,” Boxell admitted. “We did better against Azle, and Jeffery Howard scored 22. We were able to score the ball well (against Azle).”
Boxell said Braemar presented some mismatches because of its size with several stocky 6-foot-5 players on the roster.
“We’re making it work with what we have right now,” Boxell said. “We were a bit sluggish in our second game.”
There’s still a chance Bowie (2-3 record) could defend its own championship, based on Friday’s performances versus Mineral Wells and in a seeding game during the late afternoon slate.
Bowie wasn’t able to consistently make perimeter shots in the loss to Braemar.
Zeke Vaughan was the Jackrabbits’ top scorer with 10 while Jeffery Howard netted seven points and recorded three steals.
Kaden Ogle added six points, on two 3-pointers in the third quarter as Bowie attempted to come back from a 30-19 deficit. Read more, and see the box score, in the Dec. 5 edition of The Bowie News.

Nocona got its new press box into place this week at Jack Crane Stadium. The old press box, which was in place for more than 60 years, was taken out in early June and moved to Indian Valley Raceway. The new press box was by the Southern Bleacher Company out of Graham. Athletic Director Black Crutsinger said they looked at a lot of press boxes and decided they liked the one at Lindsay High School and went with that model. Sean Hutson operated the crane from the Hurd Crane Service that put the press box up for Nocona.
