Stepfather accused of shooting child age 3

Published

on

What began as a tragic handgun accident Tuesday afternoon turned violent as the stepfather of three-year-old Dominic Tra’Juan Castro, was arrested Wednesday night and accused of capital murder in the boy’s shooting death.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at 2:56 p.m. on May 17 from a travel trailer located at 4784 Buffalo Springs Road in the Joy/Vashti area. The 911 caller reported the three-year-old boy had been shot in the head and was believed to be dead.

Castro was the child of one of the trailer’s occupants, Veronica Castro. Sheriff Kenny Lemons described George Coty Wayman, 18, as the child’s stepfather.

Emergency medical personnel arrived on the scene and the child was transported to United Regional Health System in Wichita Falls. The boy died from his injuries at 10:34 a.m. the next day. Further investigation found the witness stories did not connect, and officers discovered Wayman had threatened to shoot the child if he did not stop jumping on the bed.
