Former Gold-Burg High School principal and head football coach Jay Johnson officially signed a contract to join the coaching staff at Lone Oak.
“It’s another rural community that’s like Muenster,” said Johnson, who also runs a cattle operation in Cooke County. “They have a fantastic education program and the STAAR scores are good.”
Johnson reported he will be the running backs coach and coach junior varsity basketball and baseball. In the classroom, he will teach leadership and career technology courses.
Lone Oak is a Conference 3A Division II school in the same district with Alba-Golden, Edgewood, Winona, Como-Pickton and Big Sandy Harmony. The town is a short drive from Greenville.
The Buffaloes are coming off a 6-5 season, which included a bi-district round loss to Hooks 41-26.
“Jay is a really great guy first and foremost,” said Luke Goode, Lone Oak athletic director and head football coach. “He cares about the kids, and he has an abundance of knowledge on football. He knows the x’s and o’s. It was a no-brainer.” Read more in the June 17 Bowie News.
