Nocona teams win against Olney
The Nocona basketball teams both beat Olney on Friday before the Lady Indians won in Peaster and the Indians team lost to Whitesboro on Saturday.
Both teams beat the Cubs and Lady Cubs in one-sided games, the boy’s team winning 81-38 and the girl’s team winning 69-13. The Nocona girl’s team beat a tough Lady Greyhound team 78-71 while the boy’s team lost a close one with the Bearcats 56-48.The Lady Indians blitzed Olney first on Friday with their defense, allowing them to push the ball in transition with outlet passes.
Even with the team up 37-10 at halftime, Coach Kyle Spitzer saw even better defense in the second half as Nocona allowed only three points the rest of the way.
Averee Kleinhans led the team with 23 points while Karlee Brown was second with 14 points and Stephanie Gutierrez scored 13 points off the bench.
For the boy’s team, Nocona scored a season high picking up its second win of the season. The Indians got started fast scoring 24 points in the first quarter to capture the lead and never relinquish. Nocona finished even better outscoring the Cubs 23-5 in the fourth quarter to wrap up the win.
Landry McCasland and Michael Wetmore led the team scoring 15 points each while Adam Meekins was right behind them scoring 14 points.
On Saturday both teams were on the road. The Nocona girls played a Lady Greyhounds team who had just won at Bowie the night before.
Early on Peaster jumped out to a 25-17 lead in the first quarter. The Lady Indians hung around and trailed only 40-35 at halftime.
Nocona’s defense stepped up in the second half. The Lady Indians took the lead 58-55 in the third quarter and continued their run in the fourth quarter as their lead grew to 15 points at one time.
The Lady Greyhounds cut into that lead in the end, but Nocona held on to win 78-71. Kleinhans led the team with 29 points, but five different players all together finished with double-digit totals.
For the Nocona boy’s team, it was a close game from the start at Whitesboro. The Indians took control in the first quarter and led 18-7, but the Bearcats were not going to go away easy.
Whitesboro’s defense held Nocona to seven points in the second quarter as the lead was cut to 25-24 at halftime.
Four 3-pointers from the Bearcats allowed them to take the lead in the third quarter 38-34.In the fourth quarter, the Indians could not keep Whitesboro off of the free throw line as it made 11 of 17 attempts in the quarter. This allowed the Bearcats to keep the lead while running clock as they won 56-48.
Cesar Gutierrez led the team with 14 points while Meekins was second scoring nine points off of three 3-pointers.

Nocona got its new press box into place this week at Jack Crane Stadium. The old press box, which was in place for more than 60 years, was taken out in early June and moved to Indian Valley Raceway. The new press box was by the Southern Bleacher Company out of Graham. Athletic Director Black Crutsinger said they looked at a lot of press boxes and decided they liked the one at Lindsay High School and went with that model. Sean Hutson operated the crane from the Hurd Crane Service that put the press box up for Nocona.
Sunset native Cason Richey (right) and his team roping partner Beldon Cox from Weatherford repeated as the International Finals Youth Rodeo champions last weekend at Shawnee, OK. Richey and Cox won the previous year and were able to complete the repeat by catching three steers in a combined time of 16.6 seconds. Richey is expected to compete attend Texas Tech University this fall and compete on the rodeo team.
The Chisholm Trail Youth Rodeo had its awards ceremony this week, giving out plaques and buckles to the top competitors throughout the summer season.
There were four age categories with five events to compete in for the young athletes.
Along with the best results in each event, at the end the overall best cowboy and cowgirl in each age division was awarded as well.
The lead line division, in which an adult helps the young competitors, saw Rylee Stewart win the first in poles, barrel racing and mystery event on her way to win top cowgirl.
Hattie Snow got the fastest time in the flags event and Lany Shupak got the fastest goat time. Riggin Bishop got named the top cowboy in the division.
In the eight-and-under division, Whitley Goins won the top cowgirl and Trell Carpenter won top cowboy. Goins got the fastest times in barrel racing, flags and mystery event. Carpenter got the fastest time in poles and goats.
In the 9-12 age division, Sage Keck won the top cowgirl while Chisum Carpenter won the top cowboy. Keck got the fastest times in four of the five divisions. Only Layna Taylor getting the fastest goat time prevented her from winning in a clean sweep.
In the 13-18 age division, Tess Egenbacher won the top overall cowgirl award.
Kiley McCracken won both the barrel racing and flags event. Emma Strahan won the poles and mystery event. Hadlee Bryan won the goats event.
There was no top overall cowboy in the age division.
