In the boys’ game, a closely fought contest culminated with Taten Vann’s game-tying layup with less than a minute remaining in regulation – forcing overtime as the Longhorns and Greyhounds were knotted at 51-all.
The Longhorns took advantage of Slidell’s fouls, especially during the final minute of overtime.
“We just wanted to continue improving our game,” said Horns coach Steve Sandusky. “And we did that.”
The Horns played a good first half, taking a 34-27 game to the locker room.
Slidell climbed back into the game by outscoring Forestburg 15-8 in the fourth.
But it was Vann’s layup proving to be the most important basket of the quarter as it sent the game into overtime.
During the extra session, Forestburg gained a 61-57 lead at one point, but Slidell made it a nail-biter very late.
The Greyhounds were very close to sending the game to a second overtime, but a tip-in attempt of a thrown pass failed.
“We changed our defense for the game,” Sandusky noted. “We had good defensive movement and communication. Our defense won the game for us. We stayed the course.”

Bowie, Nocona compete in VB scrimmages

Published

Nocona’s volleyball team headed to Bowie for a three-team scrimmage with the host team and Ponder Aug. 7.

Each team played the other two for 30 minutes in the Lady Rabbit gym. Lady Indian Coach Sandy Langford said she thought things went well for a first scrimmage.

“Just like any young team that is trying to find itself in a first scrimmage, We looked really good at times and at others not so much,” Langford said. “We’re forming a new team after losing a lot of seniors.”

Langford said the squad would have one thing go wrong and it would explode into several things. That will need to stop for a successful year in Langford’s mind.
