The Bowie Jackrabbits lost a fierce back-and-forth game at Bridgeport on Friday night.
The Bulls staved off the Jackrabbits desperate final drive to win 35-28 in a game where neither team was ever up by more than one touchdown.
Bowie was coming into the game feeling good after winning its season opener against Callisburg despite not playing too well on offense. Bridgeport was coming off a tough loss to City View in week one.
The Jackrabbits took the lead in the first quarter when quarterback Rayder Mann scored on a 12-yard scramble. Shortly after there was a lightning delay that lasted about an hour and half before the game could get back under way.
Bowie led 7-0 after the first quarter was over.
The Bulls answered in the second quarter as a drive ended with big running back Cole Pritchard scored on a short plunge to tie the game.
The Jackrabbits responded with their own drive, capitalized when Mann found Tyler Richey for a one-yard touchdown pass. Bowie got its lead back now up 14-7.
Bridgeport came back and with a little less than a minute to go before halftime tied the game at 14-14 as Pritchard scored on another short run.
In the third quarter the Bulls took their first lead on a 15-yard touchdown pass. Bowie answered with its own drive, punctuated by Justin Clark scoring on a three-yard run to tie the game at 21-21.
Bridgeport was able to score before the quarter ended, with another drive ending with a short Pritchard touchdown run. The Bulls led 28-21 heading into the fourth quarter.
Bowie’s offense struggled in the fourth quarter and could not answer. Bridgeport’s offense was driving again and looking like it might give the Bulls a definitive lead as it entered the Jackrabbits territory.
Then cornerback Braden Rhyne caught on overthrown ball for an interception, broke a tackle, bumped into an unaware Bridgeport lineman before breaking away down the sideline for a 70-yard touchdown. It tied the score back up at 28-28 early in the quarter.
Bowie had a chance to take the lead later, but turned the ball over with a fumble.
Bridgeport then scored quickly on a 40-yard touchdown pass to take the lead 35-28.
The Jackrabbits had one final drive with less than a minute left to frantically try and tie the game up, but could not get it done.
The Bulls won 35-28.
