Closing ‘a real possibility’ for Bowie Memorial Hospital; board members say financial problems have not changed

Is Bowie Memorial Hospital closing?

When confronted with that direct question, Board Chairman Tim Winn choose his words carefully, but said, “it is a real possibility.”

“Our biggest issue is revenue and it is not keeping up with expenses, so yes, it is a very real possibility, despite all that has been done to reduce costs,” explained Winn.

It has been a tumultuous five years for the Bowie Memorial Hospital and its board of directors: Loss of administrative leadership, a failed tax district election, staffing cuts, selling off assets and, in the end, trying to find any option to keep the doors open.

It has become something of a snowball that continues to roll downhill toward closing with very few obstacles still standing in its way.

Recently, two members of the board of directors, and the chief executive officer, met with City of Bowie officials to provide them with the status of the hospital.

It also may have been a foreshadowing of things to come as the city council was scheduled to meet with its legal counsel Tuesday night to consider its legal obligations as the creator of the hospital authority.
