The Bowie High School powerlifting team produced a bountiful harvest of top marks and a bushel full of awards during the Third Annual Chico Invitational on Saturday.
The Rabbit boys and girls placed third in their respective genders.
“All of our lifters had their highest totals of the year and we took home three of four best lifter awards,” Bowie head powerlifting coach Quentin Berend said.
“The Bowie powerlifters stepped up their game and competed really well,” Berend added. “Our lifters increased their regional rankings. I’m really excited how they competed.”
Overall, Bowie’s girls scored 31 points, nine points behind winner Springtown and host Chico. The Bowie boys tallied 24 points, behind Decatur and Ponder. Nocona’s girls were sixth with 14 points.
Five Bowie girls and three Bowie boys finished among in the top-two in several weight divisions.
Competing in the 114-pound weight class, Kylie Robinson was named best girls’ lightweight lifter, hoisting a combined 605 pounds in the following disciplines: Squat, bench press and dead lift. Read more in the mid-week Bowie News.

Published

on

New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.

“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”

McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.

McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.
