Bowie High School powerlifter Abraham Landaverde wasn’t about to be denied.
Landaverde won the boys’ 148-pound weight division, hoisting 1,075 pounds for first place during Saturday’s Jacksboro Invitational at Jacksboro Middle School.
It was part and parcel of a successful day for the Bowie boys and girls powerlifting teams. The girls claimed third place in a field of seven teams. The boys were fourth among 11 squads.
Overall, there were 91 male and 36 lifters in this limited grouping.
“The powerlifters worked really hard this past week and improved on their overall totals,” Bowie powerlifting head coach Quentin Berend said. “Most are sitting in good standing and have great shots at qualifying for regionals.”
This week, Bowie will compete at the Nocona Invitational alongside the Indians.
Berend said this weekend’s meet is all about widening gaps in terms of regional qualification. The regional meets take place in a month.
Landaverde produced a 405-pound squat to go with a bench press of 250 pounds and a dead lift of 420 pounds for his grand total, which was 30 pounds better than Darian Sotomi of Paradise. Read more, and see complete team standings, in the mid-week Bowie News.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
