For the first time this season, the Bowie High School girls’ powerlifting team won a meet championship on Saturday at the Nocona Invitational.
Bowie scored 29 points, which was six clear of Wichita Falls City View, which included winning three divisions.
Nocona’s girls also had a successful home meet with Lexi Towery claiming the 165-pound title with a three-lift combination of 645 pounds, and Deziray Graham and Jessica Vogel also had top-five finishes. Competitors must complete a squat, bench press and dead lift.
“I was really proud of all three girls,” Nocona head powerlifting coach Brandon Owen said. “Every one of them increased their weight totals, and Lexi won it, which was awesome.”
On the boys’ side, Bowie finished fourth as a team and Nocona’s Parker Marshall finally reached his target weight in lifts at 1,000 pounds.
“Parker lifted 1,000 pounds, which was his goal at the beginning of the season, so that was amazing for us, too,” Owen added.
Bowie head powerlifting coach Quentin Berend also had plenty of reasons to smile.
“All the Bowie lifters had a great day, and they just keep strengthening their regional standings,” Berend said. “The girls had a phenomenal day winning the meet with three first-place finishers and a best lifter award.
“Now we will be gaining strength in the next few weeks, and getting ready for the regional meet,” Berend added.
The regional meets are set with the girls on Feb. 28 at Whitesboro and the boys’ competition at Chico on March 6.
Kylie Robinson was the best girls’ lightweight lifter, the third time this season she has claimed such an honor. Read more, and see team standings, in the mid-week Bowie News.

Coming into the Jan. 30 District 9-2A battle between Nocona and Windthorst at Indian Gym, most fans expected a repeat performance of the first meeting, which the Indians won in overtime.

The Trojans had other ideas.

Playing a very aggressive style from the get-go, Windthorst took control early by using 82% shooting from the field to take a 15-point lead after one quarter. It would prove to be the difference in a 61-48 win over the Indians before a packed house.

Both teams are now 6-2 in district (Nocona 27-4 overall, Windthorst 20-6).

Bowie boys corraled at home by City View

In the Jan. 31 battle between the boys basketball teams of Bowie and City View, the host Rabbits hung with the District 7-3A leaders for nearly a half but the Mustangs used their athleticism and speed to pull away in the second half of a 71-58 win.

Bowie is now 1-7 in district and 11-18 overall with City View goes to 7-1 and 15-6. Bowie Coach Ryan Dykes said his squad played hard for a while but needs to put together four quarters.

“I liked our start, our intensity from the tip,” Dykes said. “We did a good job rotating defensively and that seemed to rattle them early.”

Nocona girls rout Windthorst at home

Sy Parker wanted to celebrate her 16th birthday in a big way.

The Nocona sophomore did just that, pacing a big first quarter for the Lady Indians with 17 points and six rebounds. The hosts fed off of that and would end up cruising over Windthorst, 61-23 Friday afternoon.

Nocona ran its record to 22-7 and 8-1 in District 9-2A while Windthorst is now 12-12 and 6-3 in district. Lady Indian Coach Kyle Spitzer’s pregame want of playing fast came to fruition.

“We like to push the pace and we did that, most notably Sy,” Spitzer said. “When (Windthorst) went into a zone (defense), it slowed us down a bit.”
