ARCHERY: Sears takes more honors
Montague Independent School District eighth-grader Connor Sears continues to pile up the accolades in the sport of archery.
Two weekends ago at the Texas Field Archery Association state meet in the Waco Convention Center, Sears garnered TFAA Shooter of the Year accolades.
Sears won the youth division and broke two state records, one for the highest score at the tournament and another for the highest cumulative score.
Sears recorded a perfect 1,500 cumulative score, which guarantees him an Olympic application.
At the meet in Waco, he recorded a score of 600 with 105 X’s – dropping only 15 X’s out of the 120 shots he fired. The previous record was 599.
Last weekend, Sears competed in a USA Archery event at College Station, and he won the Junior Olympic Archery Development Program’s Cub Division and the standard indoor nationals.
This weekend, Sears is expected to compete at the National Field Archery Association indoor meet slated for Cinnamon Creek Ranch in Roanoke, before heading into outdoor season.

The club will be open to compound, recurve and longbow shooters.
Tournaments can be scheduled if there is enough local interest.
People with archery instruction or tournament directing skills will be welcome.
Practices will start when warmer weather arrives.
The archery club provides a relaxed, recreational way to enjoy the sport.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
