HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL: Bentley no-no part of success

The Bowie High School baseball team couldn’t have scripted a better start to the 2015 season.
The Jackrabbits found all sorts of ways to win – going 6-0 at the Walker Stallcup Tournament this past weekend.
On Friday, Bowie pitcher and Vernon College-bound Coby Bentley threw a four-inning no-hitter in a 13-0 romp followed by a slim 6-5 win over Pampa that featured a Dylan Slade homer.
Bowie remained victorious on Saturday, taking a pair of tight games over Holdenville, Okla., 9-6 and Graham 6-4.
“We knew we had an opportunity to be good this year,” Bowie head coach Ryan Rogers said. “It’s confidence. That’s why we’ve been successful. Confidence has been a big part of it.”
Each week, Bowie has a 30-minute workout devoted to the mental side of baseball, which includes situational moments in a game.
Working the mind and the body has yielded Bowie a 9-1-1 start heading into Tuesday’s District 3A-9 opener at Jacksboro. The Jackrabbits have shown the ability to play well even during uncomfortable circumstances such as a close game.
Bentley’s no-hitter was the highlight of the weekend. He threw just 53 pitches in four innings, 37 of them for strikes. He surrendered just one walk while striking out six. Read more, and see complete box scores, in the mid-week Bowie News.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
