Bowie High School head baseball coach Ryan Rogers has a great pitching arsenal.
Part of that arsenal was on display Thursday during the opening day of the Walker Stallcup Tournament.
The Jackrabbits shut out Childress, 11-0, and followed that with a tight 5-3 victory over Springtown.
“It’s big to get these wins,” Rogers said. “This will give us momentum and confidence for the rest of the weekend. We’re playing six games.”
The wins improved Bowie’s record to 5-1-1. The Jackrabbits continued Stallcup Tourney play on Friday with Pampa and Lake Worth. Today, the team plays Holdenville, Okla., at 1:30 p.m. and then Graham at 3:45 p.m. to wrap up the tournament.
Proceeds from the tournament benefit the Walker Stallcup Foundation, which provides scholarships.
Lawson Mickler pitched a complete game shut out versus Childress. Chandler Dean and Carter Shackelford combined to beat Springtown with Dean earning the win and Shackelford recording the save.
“Chandler did a good job of pounding the zone,” Rogers said. “And Lawson in that first game pitched a complete game. It will help us save our bullpen. It gives us some length for the rest of the tournament.”
Rogers said he has confidence in any Bowie pitcher that takes the bump. Read the weekend Bowie News for more, including the complete box score.

While his teammates root him on, Bowie’s Trace Hardee goes into his slide during the sixth inning of Thursday’s Walker Stallcup Tournament game here in Bowie. Hardee was safe, and the Jackrabbits defeated Springtown 5-3. (News photo by Eric Viccaro)

Published

on

New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.

“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”

McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.

McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.
