HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Another giant leap for Bowie boys

The Bowie High School boys’ basketball team took another giant leap on Monday.
As second-year Jackrabbits’ head coach Doug Boxell continues to stamp this program, every notch, virtually every step, is charted.
Monday night at Saginaw High School, Bowie survived a late Dallas Life Oak Cliff surge as the Jackrabbits topped the Lions 55-44 to win a Conference 3A Area championship.
Bowie improved to 25-9 on the season with the uproarious event.
“I’m proud of the guys,” said Boxell, the multi-time state champion mentor. “The kids knew what to do to win. They were all locked in and concentrated.”
For more than three quarters, Bowie controlled the tempo. The Jackrabbits methodical style has won them plenty of games lately – the District 3A-9 championship over Henrietta and the bi-district crown over Pottsboro.
Boxell said the Jackrabbits needed to handle Dallas Life Oak Cliff’s full-court press, keep the Lions from the lane and grab defensive rebounds. The team did well with all three of these concepts to win.
It was more of the same here, except for a dramatic final three minutes that forced fans from both sides to remain standing.
“The last three minutes were wild,” Boxell said. “But, we took care of business. We made plays defensively, Zeke took that charge and then we were able to hit some key free throws. I was proud of the way the kids kept their composure.”
Now, Bowie will play Ponder at 4 p.m. tonight at Decatur, weather permitting. Boxell formerly coached at Ponder, and guided them to three state championships in 2001, 2008 and 2009.
“This is an exciting time for us,” Boxell said. “It’s going to be a great challenge, but no matter who we play, the kids know they have a chance to win.”

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys

Published

New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.

“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”

McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.

McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.
