There will be five Montague County athletes competing in the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association state meet this Saturday.
The event will take place at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, with competition set for 8 a.m.
Weigh-in is set for 5:30 a.m. with a judges’ meeting at 6:45 a.m. and then the coaches will meet at 7:15 a.m.
Both Bowie head powerlifting coach Quentin Berend and Nocona coach Brandon Owen agree the state meet isn’t like any other.
“I think state does have a different atmosphere,” Owen commented. “I’ve coached in a state championship football game, and it is neat to know the season will end with you having a chance to win a championship. I’m looking forward to the experience.”
Berend said this is the grand stage.
“It’s a huge building,” he said. “They have 10 (weight) racks going at once. They are all lined up. Each weight class has its own rack. A lot of girls will be going for the big weights.”
Both Bowie and Nocona will lift in the same classification – 3A. In all, there are five classes in girls’ powerlifting.
Bowie will be led by 114-pounder Kylie Robinson, and she’ll be joined by Shelbi Rhoda in the 132-pound division and then Hannah Shaw at 148 pounds. Nocona has 165-pounder Lexi Towery and 220-plus division standout Deziray Graham. Read more in the mid-week Bowie News.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
