HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL: ‘Dean’ of pitching

Bowie High School’s Chandler Dean and Holliday’s Tyler Munden put on a dazzling show on Tuesday.
This was a classic pitcher’s duel.
But, in the end, Dean proved to be too much for Holliday to handle as the Jackrabbits nipped the Eagles 1-0 in a thrilling District 3A-9 contest on Tuesday.
“It started again for us with a great pitching performance,” Bowie head coach Ryan Rogers said. “Chandler attacked the zone. He made Holliday put the ball in play, and our defense made plays.”
With the win, Bowie improved to 15-1-2, 5-0 in 3A-9. Holliday dropped to 4-1 in the district, giving the Jackrabbits sole possession of first place.
Bowie and Holliday could only muster four hits combined. Jackrabbit and Eagle batters totaled 21 strikeouts.
Dean threw 66 strikes in 97 pitches. Of the 27 batters Dean faced, he threw 19 of them first-pitch strikes in this complete-game shutout. He issued just two walks and had one hit batsman.
“Chandler was able to command and locate his fastball,” Rogers said.
Dean rarely threw off-speed pitches, only occasionally to keep Holliday’s hitters guessing, but that fastball turned into his personal calling card. Read more, and see the complete box score, in the weekend Bowie News.

Bowie’s Chandler Dean (5) rears back to pitch during the first inning of Tuesday’s District 3A-9 game between the Jackrabbits and Holliday. Dean fanned 12 Eagles as Bowie recorded a slim 1-0 victory to take sole possession of first place. Click on the image for the complete photo. (News photo by Eric Viccaro)

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys

Published

on

New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.

“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”

McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.

McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.
