HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL: Paradise no match for Bowie

Bowie High School head baseball coach Ryan Rogers used an example from this past weekend concerning playing a suspended game.
Texas A&M and Arkansas played a suspended game in Southeastern Conference play, with the Aggies leading the Razorbacks 8-3 when play was halted in the sixth inning on Saturday. The game resumed on Sunday, with Arkansas prevailing 9-8.
Rogers wanted to make sure the same thing didn’t happen to the Jackrabbits, and it didn’t.
“You never know what can happen when you resume a suspended game,” Rogers said. “I knew we needed to score more runs, and put the pressure back on them. I was pleased with the kids’ effort. We did what we needed to do to win.”
Bowie scored three times in the third inning, and eventually the Conference 3A top-10 Jackrabbits prevailed 12-1 over Paradise in 3A-9 play on Monday.
Bowie improved to 20-1-2 overall, an unblemished 10-0 in the district.
Coby Bentley, Carter Shackelford and Lawson Mickler sparked the win at the plate. Shackelford was a perfect 1-for-1 with two walks, two runs and three RBIs. Read more, and see the complete box score, in the mid-week Bowie News.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys

Published

on

New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.

“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”

McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.

McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.

Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.

“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”

Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
