Bowie High School will send nine players to the Conference 3A regional meet set for April 20-21 at Tyler Junior College in Tyler.
This was by virtue of the Rabbits’ performance in the District 3A-9 tournament on Tuesday and Wednesday at BHS Tennis Courts.
Katelin Price defeated a player from Holliday Hannah Todd to garner the girls’ singles. Todd won a playback on Thursday morning for second place.
“I was very pleased with them all,” Bowie head boys’ and girls’ tennis coach David Hall said. “Our boys are young. The girls did an outstanding job. It was an exciting two days. We did well, and I am happy for them.”
Hall said it was Price’s court sense and ability to move the ball around that secured the top spot.
The coach also was complimentary of the Rabbits’ doubles teams as the team of Meagan Russell and Myah Russell earned first place.
The Russells defeated teammates Veronica Hernandez and Stephanie Crawford for the top spot. But, both Hernandez and Crawford also are advancing to the regional tournament.
“The Russell girls are always putting in extra time at the courts,” Hall said.
Hall said Bowie’s mixed doubles tandem consisting of Maria Gonzalez and Cameron Gunter are very athletic, and that’s why the pair won. Gonzalez and Gunter defeated a team from Henrietta.
Gunter devoted this season to tennis, and it’s paid off. Read more in the weekend Bowie News.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.
