HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS: Five qualify for next round in Conference 1A
Five area athletes have advanced to the Conference 1A regional tennis meet set for next week.
The 1A regional tennis meet is set for April 20-21 at Tarleton State University in Stephenville.
The top two individuals and teams qualified in every bracket.
Saint Jo’s Sarah Patrick won the girls’ singles division with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Adina Zidermanis from Slidell at the District 1A-21 meet last week in Denton.
In the girls’ doubles division, no local teams advanced. In the third-place match, Haley Nolan and Hope Phipps topped Kaylee Choate and Virginia Cody in this battle of doubles teams from Forestburg.
John Grunseich and Broc Terry from Bellevue advanced all the way to the boys’ doubles finals, before falling to Slidell’s Khristian Talamantes and Tyler Maynard. Slidell won 6-3, 6-4.
Prairie Valley’s Robin Fenoglio and Matt Suarez won mixed doubles in a three-set match by scores of 6-2, 1-6, 6-0, defeating Slidell’s Jessy Goode and Mason Maynard.
Bellevue was third among boys’ teams with 15 points, and Prairie Valley fourth with 10. Saint Jo scored 15 points in girls, with Forestburg and Prairie Valley tied for second with 10 each.
In the junior varsity division, Molly Metcalf from Forestburg was second. Matthew Wallace won boys’ singles. Shelby Horton and Danielle Parr teamed up to win JV girls’ doubles.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
