OUTDOORS: Land stewardship week arrives

Published

on

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is partnering with the Association of Texas Soil and Water Conservation Districts, Texas Wildlife Association and Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board to highlight land stewardship and water availability this week.
The statewide campaign is called, “Land Stewardship: Providing Water for Texans.”
Soil and Water Stewardship Week will run through May 3.
“Water supply is always a ‘hot topic’ issue in Texas,” said Jan Thompson, of the Stewardship Committee of the Association of Texas Soil and Water Conservation Districts.
Thompson said the campaign is meant to bring more awareness and support to voluntary land stewardship, resource management on private lands and public consumption.
Effective land stewardship increases the ability for open land to absorb water, replenish aquifers and ensure better water drainage into springs, rivers, lakes and streams.
Methods of land stewardship are grazing on ranches, use of cover crops by farmers, wildlife enhancement and the removal of invasive brush species.
Soil and water conservation performed in urban settings also may help supplement land stewardship in rural locales.
Here are other methods of land stewardship: Using plants that require little landscape or water and identifying and fixing leaks at your home.
The Upper Trinity Groundwater Conservation District is one of the partnering organizations in this campaign.
