BASEBALL: Bowie Sports Association tournament June 27
The Bowie Sports Association will have its 23rd annual baseball tournament beginning at 8 a.m. on June 27 at Haggar Sports Complex.
The tournament will run through June 28.
The facility is located on South Mill Street across the street from North Central Texas College’s campus.
There will be three divisions of play: 10-under, 12-under and 14-under. This is a pool play-formatted tournament. Championship games are slated for Sunday.
Bowie Sports Association Commissioner Dean Cage reported there are 22 teams signed up for the event, from as far away as Iowa Park, Sweetwater, Breckenridge, Rotan and Springtown.
There will be at least one Bowie team participating in the event.
Cage said brackets will be available at the complex on the day of the tournament. Also, keep your eyes peeled for The Bowie News’ Facebook page for Bowie’s schedule of games.
First- and second-place teams in all divisions will receive trophies.
Tournament T-shirts will be available, and a full concession stand will be in operation.
This tournament serves as a fundraiser for the Bowie Sports Association.
Cage also said because of recent rainouts, regular season games are scheduled through Tuesday, July 2.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
