The Bowie and Nocona High School boys’ basketball teams both will be competing in the Texas Basketball Championships at Grapevine starting Friday.
“This will give our kids more comparable competition,” Bowie head boys’ basketball coach Doug Boxell said. “There’s a five-game guarantee. We will spend time together and develop chemistry.”
Bowie has been placed in Division II Pool No. 6 with Anna, Callisburg and Lipan. Nocona will play in a tough Pool No. 3. Other teams in Pool No. 3 are Melissa, Sabine, Burkburnett and Waskom.
Bowie’s first game is Friday at noon versus Callisburg, the team the Jackrabbits defeated for the bi-district title last season.
Nocona doesn’t play until 3 p.m. on Friday against Sabine.
Other games for Bowie are as follows: Anna, 4 p.m. on Friday and Lipan at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
Nocona also will play at 6 p.m. on Friday against Burkburnett, 1 p.m. on Saturday versus Melissa and 4 p.m. against Waskom.
Based on where the Jackrabbits and Indians finish, they will enter championship play starting as early as 5 p.m. on Saturday. Games will continue through 5 p.m. on Sunday. Read more in the mid-week Bowie News.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
