HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: For Correa, it’s time to shine

Recent Bowie High School graduate David Correa has one more football game left.
Correa will represent the West Texas team during the Oil Bowl game at 7:30 p.m. today at Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls.
“It’s always a special when one of our kids has an opportunity to play in the Oil Bowl,” Bowie head football coach Dylan Stark said.
Stark said Correa is a fine representative for the Bowie football team and the community.
Many ex-Bowie football players have competed in this prestigious game: Garland McCoy in 2014, Tod Jackson in 2013, Madison Firmin in 2012 and Aaron Chokas in 2011.
McCoy went on to play for Texas Lutheran in Seguin. Firmin became a long snapper at Harding University in Searcy, Ark.
Correa said he’s undecided on his future at the point, but some form of college football still remains a possibility.
This week has been enjoyable for Correa, who has stayed in a residence hall at Midwestern State University.
“It’s been a blast,” Correa said. “I’m having a good time, and it’s been a learning experience with all these great athletes. It’s been an honor to be invited to this, and play with some of the best athletes around.”

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
