OUTDOORS NOTEBOOK: Alligator gar fishing returns

Published

on

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is reopening fishing for alligator gar.
It will be reopened in portions of the river between the Texas Highway 31 Bridge near Trinidad and the Highway 7 Bridge near Crockett.
This is effective as of June 11.
The TPWD temporarily prohibited taking or attempting to take alligator gar to protect spawning. Alligator gar is a species of conservation concern in the Trinity River.
Water conditions identified by the department – which included the presence of a flood level at moderate stage by the United States Geological Survey – caused prohibition.
Officials believe most of the alligator gar spawning has most likely occurred by now.
The temporary prohibition did not affect alligator gar fishing in parts of the state other than those areas of the Trinity River from Trinidad to Crockett.

BugFest set for River Bend

The River Bend Nature Center will have BugFest from 6-9 p.m. on June 19 at the center in Wichita Falls.
Children will be able to make crafts.
There also will be face painting, games and concessions will be available.
Oklahoma State University’s entomology department will have an interactive display with all sorts of insects.
Admission is $5 per person, and $4 for RBNC members. Children one year old and under are admitted free.
For information, call the River Bend Nature Center at 1-940-767-0843.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys

Published

on

New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.

“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”

McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.

McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.
