Janis Sneed has been named grand marshal for the Saint Jo Rodeo parade set for 5 p.m. on June 6.
Sneed has been instrumental in pursuing the Chisholm Trail designation as a National Historical Trail, running through Saint Jo, helping the city obtain a marker of distinction.
The Saint Jo Riding Club has a display at both the Stonewall Saloon and Trailtown Treasures, both owned by Sneed.
“Her strong support of our rodeo and our riding club makes her the perfect choice to be grand marshal,” said Saint Jo Riding Club Secretary Melissa Chaffin.
The rodeo will begin at 8 p.m. on both June 5 and June 6 at the Saint Jo Riding Club Arena on United States Highway 82, on the eastern edge of the community.
There will be saddle bronc, ranch bronc, bucking bulls, steer wrestling, barrel racing, team roping and tie-down roping on the docket.
The card will feature a stick bull competition for children ages six years old and under. Unlike previous years, there will be no mutton bustin’. The Forestburg Riding Club will provide entertainment both nights.
This year’s Saint Jo Rodeo has been dedicated to Coy Mosley and Kay Casey, two longtime riding club members who died during the past year. Read more in the mid-week Bowie News.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
