SHRINE FOOTBALL: Bowie’s Correa makes memories

Bowie High School senior David Correa lined up against impressive defensive linemen during the 78th annual Maskat Shrine Game on Saturday at Wichita Falls.
Correa played alternating series for the West, which fell to the East 7-3 as it scored a fourth-quarter touchdown on a Jaylon Smith 5-yard scamper.
“I didn’t think I played as well as I could,” Correa said. “They had some great defensive linemen, some of the best I’ve ever seen. They were quick off the ball. I had some good blocks, and I had some bad blocks.”
It capped off a memorable week for Correa, who represented the Jackrabbits in the game.
This marked the fifth straight year Bowie had one player in the Shrine Game: Aaron Chokas (2011), Madison Firmin (2012), Tod Jackson (2013) and Garland McCoy (2014).
Wichita Falls Old High coach Danny Russell was impressed with how Correa carried out his blocking assignments against players from schools in larger conferences.
“I think from what he had to learn in one week, he did exceptionally well,” said Russell, entering his third season leading the Coyotes. “He had a tough job. He had to snap the ball, and he was going against some big-time kids.”
Russell said Correa is one of the most intelligent centers he’s coached. Read more in the mid-week Bowie News.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
