LOCAL: Saturday busy in county with events in three different sports
Don’t tell the people of Montague County that July is a quiet period, with little activity.
This weekend, there will be three sporting events in the county – ranging from glow-ball golf tournament to youth baseball and volleyball.
There will be a glow-in-the-dark golf tournament beginning at 5 p.m. today at Indian Oaks Golf Club in Nocona.
This will be an 18-hole tournament with a two-person scramble format.
Golfers will play nine holes before dark, and then there will be a meal served in the Nocona Community Center. Following the meal, golfers will return to the course to play nine additional holes.
All players will golf from the ladies’ tee boxes.
There is a raffle for a golf cart. There also will be cash prizes, with the amount of money paid determined by the number of teams entered.
Proceeds from the tournament will go toward course improvements at Indian Oaks.
Spikefest volleyball tournament
The General Federation of Women’s Clubs will have their first-ever Montague County Summer Spikefest Tournament at Bowie Junior High School.
The event will begin in the early morning – either 8 a.m. or 9 a.m. – based on the number of teams participating.
Proceeds will go towards scholarship awards for female senior athletes in Montague County.
This tournament for high school players is designed for volleyball players to prepare for upcoming two-a-day practices while still having fun.
Concessions will be offered.
Iron Jacket Invitational
The Nokona Iron Jacket Invitational tournament is set for today and tomorrow, July 24-25, at the American Legion Baseball Complex in Nocona.
The event had originally been scheduled to take place on May 30-31, but was scrapped due to heavy rainfall.
This tournament is for travel baseball teams, sanctioned by the United States Specialty Sports Association. There will be a three-game minimum.
There are three divisions: 8-under coach pitch, 10-under and 11-under.
There also will be a tour of the Nokona glove factory in downtown, product discounts and skills events.
