Twisted Oaks Golf Club recently hired Chad Thummel as the course superintendent.
Thummel comes to Bowie from Monahans, where he served in the same capacity at Ward County Golf Course. The course was a three-way partnership between Monahans, the county and a golf association.
His official start date was July 6.
“There was a time I was playing golf with my brother, and one of his friends was in the turf management program at Kansas State University,” Thummel said. “And it hit me, ‘I could do this,’ and 21 years later I’m still doing it.”
Thummel said it’s a challenge being golf course superintendent, and there’s more to the position than simply mowing the fairways.
“I do it all,” he said. “I fix things like water leaks in sprinklers, I do fertilization and aeration. Every day is not the same.”
He’s also responsible for helping Lee Gore maintain the course’s Facebook page, and other duties as assigned.
Thummel, a native of Beloit, Kansas, was a four-year letterman on his high school golf team. He then graduated from Kansas State’s course management program in 1998.
“I missed going to state by two strokes my senior year,” he said. Older brother, Rob, also regularly plays golf. Read more in the weekend Bowie News.
