The Nocona High School volleyball team opened the 2015 campaign with a resounding three-set victory over Iowa Park on Tuesday.
The Indians defeated Iowa 25-11, 25-13, 25-17.
Nocona was rarely challenged in any of the sets, quickly establishing double-digit cushions early in every single one of them.
“I think opening the season with a win is a huge confidence builder no matter the opponent,” Nocona second-year head coach Tiffany Clay said. “These girls have been working hard for a little more than a week now, so it feels good to be rewarded for all the hard work.”
Nocona stood at 1-0 heading into the Advantage Sports Complex Tournament in Carrollton Friday and Saturday. Bowie also participates in the same event. Bracket play is set for today.
One of Nocona’s calling cards this season will be its defensive play, and the Lady Indians certainly played well in this area.
Nocona finished with 37 digs overall, 10 of them from reigning District 3A-9 libero of the year Magye Fenoglio. Angel Rhudy added eight digs. Eight different Lady Indians had at least one dig.
Jamie Carpenter, Chloey Hamilton and Karson Phipps combined for 20 assists, with Sherese Price, Payton Ferguson and Ali Walker combining for 19 kills. Read more in the weekend Bowie News.
