STORM CENTER: TCU doesn’t look No. 2
The Bowie News sports editor was all set to anoint the Texas Christian University football team as his dark horse pick to compete in the national championship game this year.
But, after Thursday night’s slim 23-17 victory over Big 10 school Minnesota, I’m not having a such a good feeling about it.
I watched part of the game here in Bowie, and I didn’t completely like what I saw.
Because of last night’s Bowie High School junior varsity maroon game, I was only able to see the second through fourth quarters. But, I saw highlights of the first quarter.
Despite my skittish feelings, there were plenty of laurels to go around.
Defensive end Terrell Lathan registered a quarterback sack in the first quarter, stripping Minnesota quarterback Mitch Leidner in the process.
Fellow Horned Frog defensive end Josh Carraway picked it up – and that set up a 10-0 lead in favor of the purple people in the opening frame.
Derrick Kindred forced a fumble in the second quarter, and that helped TCU maintain its double-digit lead.
Quarterback Trevone Boykin, who struggled at times, finally broke free on a 19-yard touchdown scamper in the third quarter.
Boykin is a dual-threat quarterback, and he showed his running ability on this play.
Overall, Boykin accounted for 246 yards passing on 26-of-42 attempts with a TD through the air. He rushed for 92 yards overall, too.
To his credit, Boykin knows the Horned Frogs are in the crosshairs of most teams. Read more of this column in the weekend Bowie News.

In its first match since last year’s state semifinal appearance, Saint Jo hosted Bryson Aug. 11 and took a 25-13, 25-12, 25-21 win over the Cowgirls.
The Lady Panthers lost some talent to graduation but have five seniors ready to have a successful season. Savannah Hil, one of the five, got Saint Jo rolling offensively with a four-point serving string, including a pair of aces. Abby Carter’s kill and Kamron Skidmore’s block helped put the Lady Panthers up 5-2 in game one.
Hadleigh Moore added a four-point string of her own to extend the lead to 10-3. Tatum Morman’s pair, helped by a Hill kill, gave Saint Jo a 14-5 lead. Bryson got within five before a Hill 3-pointer, with help by a Carter kill, put the lead back at 18-10.
After an Olivia Johnson kill broke serve, Jordyn O’Neal served up the final five points, with Johnson providing a kill to move things along.
