One bad quarter doomed the chances of success for Nocona High School’s girls’ basketball team on Friday.
Vernon outscored Nocona 23-3 in the second quarter as the Lady Lions defeated the Lady Indians in a non-district game 64-50 on Friday evening.
Still, Nocona first-year head coach Heather Nobile was encouraged by the results.
“I thought we looked a lot better against Vernon,” said Nobile, comparing this game with one against Iowa Park on Nov. 17, a 25-point loss.
“Our shots were falling better, and overall we played much better,” the coach added.
Nobile said the Lady Indians’ defense remains a work in progress. Also, a key in this game, Vernon had a 31-18 edge in free-throw attempts, making 17 from the line.
Nocona stood at 0-2 heading into Tuesday’s game against a very good squad from Petrolia.
Makenzie Franklin paced Nocona with 17 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Mackie Trumbull, who decided to join the team for her senior year, grabbed 15 rebounds.
Kalyn Crow dished off five assists while Franklin had four. Emma Meekins swiped a team-best four steals while Jamie Carpenter had three. Both Sherese Price and Carpenter grabbed six boards apiece. Read more, and see the complete box score, in the Nov. 25 Bowie News.
