The Bowie High School football team was picked to finish third in District 4-3A-I by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine.
The magazine is widely hailed as “The Bible of Texas Football,” and fans can now find this publication on newsstands across the state – primarily at Walmart, grocery stores and pharmacy counters.
Meanwhile glancing at DCTF, no team faces greater expectations than Nocona coming off a 7-4 season and first playoff berth since 2013.
The magazine has hailed Nocona as a dark horse contender to possibly make it to the Conference 3A-II state championship. The list also features Leonard, the team that knocked off the Indians last year.
Nocona head coach Brad Keck has more guarded optimism.
“We’ll see,” Keck said. “I think we have a chance to be a decent team if we stay healthy.”
Quarterback Jeremy James will return at the controls for the Indians, who were 7-4 last season. James will have Casey Jones as his new passing game coordinator.
The best part of Nocona’s team this season; however, lies with the strength of its offensive and defensive lines. DCTF also named linebacker Tanner Cable as the preseason defensive most valuable player.
Henrietta was picked to win District 5-3A-II ahead of Nocona – thanks to quarterback Zack West. Nocona is slotted second. Read more in the July 8 Bowie News.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
