The Nocona High School volleyball team will open the 2017 season with the traditional opponent – Conference 4A Iowa Park.
However, there’s a small twist.
The match will take place on Monday, Aug. 7, at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on the Midwestern State University campus in Wichita Falls.
“I think it will be a great experience for the girls to play in the coliseum,” said Tiffany Clay, entering her fourth season as head coach. “Iowa Park seems to always match up pretty well with us.”
The Nocona non-district slate is tough, with Conference 3A state tournament representative Callisburg, plus Conference 2A powerhouses Lindsay and Windthorst and a trip to Bonham (Aug. 22) on the docket.
“Playing the Callisburgs and Lindsays during the preseason really helps prepare us mentally, and know what level we need to step up to to compete,” Clay said.
The Lady Indians will play in the same tournaments as last year: The ASC Tournament scheduled for Denton Ryan (Aug. 10-12), Lu Allen Tournament in Graham (Aug. 17-19) and Buckle Up For Lane’s Sake Tournament (Aug. 31-Sept. 2). Read more in the July 19 Bowie News.

Nocona High School’s Rachel Patrick skies for a hit during a 2016 District 3A-8 clash with Paradise. Patrick will be one of the counted players for the Lady Indians this coming season as Nocona hopes to qualify for the postseason for the first time since 2013. (News photo by Eric Viccaro)

Published

New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.

“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”

McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.

McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.

Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
