LOCAL: Bowie parents’ meeting set for July 25
The Bowie Independent School District will have a parents’ meeting for athletes on July 25 in the Bowie High School commons.
The meeting will begin at 6 p.m.
Various sports teams will have tables set up, including primarily the fall sports teams of football, volleyball and cross country.
There will be new coaches’ introductions, athletic director Dylan Stark will speak and there will be a brief slideshow.
The main purpose of the parents’ meeting is to hand out paperwork, and provide information for the upcoming athletic year.
All athletes must sign and return the packet to their various sports coaches.
Forms include cardiac arrest awareness, concussion acknowledgement, steroids, the Bowie athletic policy agreement and extracurricular activities drug testing, the University Interscholastic League medical form and physical form.
Keep in mind, all students entering seventh-, ninth-, and 11th grade must also have a physical before participating in athletics this year. Read more in the July 22 Bowie News.
The Bowie High School football team will wear two different helmets for the 2017 season. The new helmet is chrome and features both a dazzling shine and maroon Jackrabbit. Bowie head football coach and athletic director Dylan Stark said the plan is to wear the helmets in “four or five games” this season. Bowie also wears a white helmet with a maroon Jackrabbit on it. McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
