Bowie Council approves budget, adopts tax rate
By BARBARA GREEN
The Bowie City Council gave final approval to the 2017-18 budget and adopted the 2017 tax rate during its Tuesday night meeting.
As both items were approved, citizen Tami Buckmaster confronted the council about its lack of response to her letters and emails regarding limits on utility rates. She also questioned city liability in the event of a lawsuit.
During the budget adoption discussion, Buckmaster asked Mayor Scott Davis and the council what they have done in regard to her inquiries about rate limits. She has advocated for lower utility rates for several months and referred to the Texas Municipal League handbook on cities stating there are limits on utility rates permitting a reasonable “return,” and the amounts that can be transferred to the general fund.
Davis said no they have taken no action because they do not agree with her information based one the city’s consultation with TML.
