BOWIE – Terry Tillman Morgan, 84, Bowie, TX went home to be with the Lord on Oct. 5, 2020 in Nocona, TX.
A funeral service took place at 11 a.m. on Oct. 9 at the First United Methodist Church in Bowie, with the Rev. Steve Martinez officiating. The burial followed at Elmwood Cemetery in Bowie.
Terry was born Feb. 3, 1936 in Ada, OK to T.O. and Pauline Morgan. In 1953 he attended Boy’s State in Austin. He graduated from Bowie High School in 1954. He went on to attend North Texas University, where he was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity. Terry then attended the University of Houston, where he was president of the Sigma Nu Fraternity, and received his degree in pharmacy.
After graduating from the University of Houston in 1960, he started a lifelong career in Pharmacy for 48 years, Terry moved back to Bowie after pharmacy school to take over the Bowie Drug from his father. On Aug. 13, 1960 Terry married the love of his life, Janet Loretta Cole in Houston and they were together 60 years. Terry proudly served his country in the National Guard, where his unit was called to active duty in the Berlin Crisis of 1961.
Later, after operating the Bowie Drug, he owned the pharmacy as part of the Gibson’s franchise and ran both businesses, until Bowie Drug closed. In 1994, Gibson’s closed and Terry built and opened Terry’s Pharmacy, which he owned and operated until it was sold to CVS in 2006. He continued to work for CVS until his retirement in 2008. However, he always missed seeing his faithful customers and friends that would stop by the drugstore. In 1965, he and his father were named Texas Conservation Farmer zone three of the Upper West Fork SWCD.
Throughout his life, he enjoyed being part of his community and was president of the chamber of commerce in 1965, serving on the city council for eight years. Terry was later elected mayor, which he served for eight more years from 1973-1981. While there, he worked to build better streets, expanded the lake and led a contingent to Washington to expand the Bowie Airport. He was a director of the Top of the Lakes Country Club from 1971-1973 and was president of the Rotary, as well as a Paul Harris Fellow. In the 1970s he became a director of the 1st Savings and Loan of Bowie and later as a director of the Bowie State Bank, now known as Jacksboro State Bank.
