Saint Jo
The Saint Jo Panthers lost to one of the top-ranked teams in the state, Graford, on Tuesday.
The Rabbits won a one-sided game 81-30.
Despite the ugly final score, the Panthers started out the game well making two 3-pointers and establishing a lead. That quickly turned before the quarter ended and Graford never let up.
Saint Jo struggled with ball security and rebounding as it fell farther and farther behind.
Brice Durham led the team with 10 points while Kile Thurman was second with eight points.
While it was a disappointing loss, Coach Lyndon Cook hopes it can serve as encouragement and a reminder of how far the team has to go.
“If nothing else can be taken away from the loss, it shows us how far we need to go to get to where our program needs to be in order to compete at the same level as them,” Cook said.
Saint Jo is next scheduled to play Chico at noon on Dec. 12 at home.

Gold-Burg
The Gold-Burg Bears got a big win at home on Tuesday playing Petrolia’s junior varsity team.
The Bears won big 63-15 against the overmatched Pirates.
Gold-Burg scored in double-figures in all four quarters while allowing only four total points in the second and third quarters.
Will Hodges led the team with 16 points while Jayon Grace joined him in double-figures scoring 11 points.
Coach Joe Helms did not have much to complain about in such a one-sided game.
Gold-Burg is next scheduled to play Vernon Northside at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 15 at home.

Prairie Valley
The Prairie Valley Bulldogs lost a close one to Trenton in overtime on Tuesday.
The Tigers won by one score 42-40 in a game the Bulldogs did not start well.
Prairie Valley scored only nine points in the first half as it fell behind. Shots from the 3-point range started to fall in the second half. The Bulldogs went on a 21-7 run in the second half to get back into the game and eventually force overtime. Unfortunately, Prairie Valley fell just short.
Tyler Winkler led the team with 22 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Isaac Yeargin scored in double figures finishing with 16 points.
The Bulldogs are next scheduled to play at Electra at 11 a.m. on Dec. 12.

Forestburg
The Forestburg Longhorns lost to Perrin-Whitt on Tuesday.
The Pirates won a one-sided game 89-20 against a Longhorns team that only suited six players.
The young and inexperienced team was led by Hayden Berry who scored 10 points for Forestburg.
Coach Eldon Van Hooser hopes to have more players available in future games as the young team tries to gain experience with only two starters returned from last year.

Forestburg coach retiring

Published

on

Forestburg boys basketball coach Eldon Van Hooser helped lead the program to its first playoff win in nine years in his last year coaching.

Eldon Van Hooser is leaving Forestburg better than he found it.
The head boy’s basketball coach is retiring after more than 30 years, spending the last five at Forestburg.
Van Hooser did not come to this decision because of a lack of fire or feeling tired after decades in the profession. He had to for family reasons.
“My wife has MS (multiple sclerosis) and it’s a disease where you have trouble standing and walking and she needs help,” Van Hooser said. “I am able to so I am going to step away from teaching and coaching to be there for her.”
Van Hooser was hired in 2019. Along with being the boy’s basketball coach, he also was the football team’s defensive coordinator.
There were some lean years for Forestburg on the boy’s athletic side, with numbers being low and the available athletes being mostly underclassmen.
For two years, the Longhorns’ boy’s basketball team won few games and one of those seasons saw the team field five players on the high school team.
“One of those years we had COVID-19 and the other we had five kids,” Van Hooser said. “It was very rough. After that we worked with the kids and we had a good freshman group coming up. Next year they are going to be seniors.”
That group has helped to turn the program around. Last year the young Longhorns team contested for a playoff spot and just barely missed it finishing fifth in the district.
This season, that same group took a leap and finished second in district with a record of 7-5.
Despite losing its last two regular season games in dramatic fashion heading into the playoffs, the team stepped up in the bi-district game.
Playing against an athletic Newcastle team, Forestburg led for most of the game.
Unfortunately, the previous game against Bellevue saw the Longhorn team blow the lead late in the fourth quarter against a hard pressing style team and they were suffering the same fate against the Bobcats down the stretch.
Fortunately, Forestburg held on just enough to win 53-46. It was the first boy’s basketball playoff win in nine years for Forestburg.
“It was huge for our program,” Van Hooser said. “This new year we will have new goals. The new coach will have some goals of his own, but I set some for the team and think that we have come a long way.”
