BHS names newest Hall of Honor members

The Bowie High School Athletic Booster Club announced on Friday during halftime of the football game the latest members who would be inducted into Bowie’s Hall of Honor.
Former Bowie athletes and coaches Ronnie Miller, Ralph and Jeanie Stark will have an official ceremony at a later date.

Ronnie Miller
Ronnie Paul Miller was a 1975 graduate of Bowie High School.
Miller was born February 2, 1957 in Wichita Falls, to Wayne and Joreen (Reid) Miller.
He was an accomplished multi-sport athlete and during high school played four years of football, basketball and track, three years of baseball and one year of golf. He was a member of the 1974 State Championship Basketball team and received All District honors in 1975. He was a two year letterman, and selected All District in both 1973 and 1974, and was selected as an All-State linebacker on the 1974 state semifinals football team. He also was a member of the 1973 Regional Championship Baseball team.
After graduating from the University of North Texas, he became an educator and coach for Bowie and an assistant coach on the 1991 state semifinalist basketball team. In addition to his long tenure at BHS, he also worked at Prairie Valley, Bellevue and Midway school districts for a combined teaching/coaching career of 42 years.
On July 30, 1983, Ronnie married Rie Sullivan in Henrietta. Ronnie and Rie raised two sons, Kelly and Matthew.

Ralph and Jeanie Stark
Ralph was a 1977 graduate of Bowie High School while Jeanie graduated in 1976.
Ralph was born on February 27, 1958 to parents Thermon and Billie Stark of Bowie.
He ran track and played football all four years of high school. He placed in district and regionals in the 120 and 330 high hurdles and the mile relay and was a state qualifier in the 330 high hurdles. In football, he played for a district championship team and led the defense that only gave up only three points to district opponents his senior year. After a third-round loss in the playoffs, Ralph received All District and the Texas Sportswriter’s Association All State honors as a defensive end.
Ralph married his high school sweetheart, Jeanie Proctor in 1978. Ralph and Jeanie had children Dylan and Chelsea Stark, who were both standout athletes at BHS.
Dylan later became a coach, head football coach and athletic director as well.
Jeanie was born to parents Homer and Beatrice Proctor of Sunset on July 28, 1958.
She was a four-year letterman in basketball and one year in track at Bowie High. She received all district honors three years in basketball. She went on to play basketball at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas from 1976-1978 and was named the MSU Female Athlete of the Year in 1978 when she averaged 16 points and 7.6 rebounds per game.
Jeanie graduated from MSU in 1981 with an Education Degree and later added a Masters in Education in 1999.
She was a teacher and coach at Montague ISD from 1981-1998 where she had a streak of five straight seasons without a single loss, winning 72 basketball games in a row.
She was honored and inducted into the Montague ISD Hall of Honor in 2011.
After a brief stint as a teacher and coach at Windthorst High School she moved to Bowie High School in 1999 where she started the volleyball program. She was a teacher and coach from 1999-2017.

Saint Jo volleyball opens with victory

In its first match since last year’s state semifinal appearance, Saint Jo hosted Bryson Aug. 11 and took a 25-13, 25-12, 25-21 win over the Cowgirls.

The Lady Panthers lost some talent to graduation but have five seniors ready to have a successful season. Savannah Hil, one of the five, got Saint Jo rolling offensively with a four-point serving string, including a pair of aces. Abby Carter’s kill and Kamron Skidmore’s block helped put the Lady Panthers up 5-2 in game one.

Hadleigh Moore added a four-point string of her own to extend the lead to 10-3. Tatum Morman’s pair, helped by a Hill kill, gave Saint Jo a 14-5 lead. Bryson got within five before a Hill 3-pointer, with help by a Carter kill, put the lead back at 18-10.

After an Olivia Johnson kill broke serve, Jordyn O’Neal served up the final five points, with Johnson providing a kill to move things along.

Lady Indian VB falls in semis at Brock Tourney

Despite being the smallest school in the Brock varsity classic volleyball tournament, the Lady Indians finished 4th out of the eight teams there.

After losing to the host team in its first pool play match Aug. 14 18-25, 14-25 and also to Class 3A Wall 12-25, 8-25, Nocona rebounded to close out pool play with a 20-25, 25-23, 25-20 win over Christoval. Sy Parker had 16 kills and 7 blocks in the three matches. Raylea Bowles had 12 kills, 17 digs and served up three aces. Maddyn Bowles had seven kills and 14 digs while Paige Davis had seven kills and 15 digs. Baylee Thomas added 11 digs.

From the setter spot, Kasi Castro had 20 assists, served up five aces and contributed 14 digs. Leah Meekins added 18 assists and six digs during the three matches.

To open Saturday’s bracket play, the Lady Indians posted a 25-18, 18-25, 26-24, 25-19 win over Fort Worth Christian. Castro staked Nocona to a 2-0 lead in game one. Kills by Parker set up pairs of points from Raylea Bowles and Leah Meekins helped Nocona negate an early deficit and take a 10-9 lead.

Area teams hit gridiron for scrimmages

County football teams had their first scrimmage of the season Aug. 14 with mixed results.

Forestburg hosted Azle Christian and Victory Christian. Under a new system with new head coach Cori Hayes, the Longhorns looked pretty good in the coach’s eye.

“The first team looked good,” Hayes explained. “Overall we need to work on our pace and blocking assignments and blocking assignments. Overall we looked good for the new regime.”

Forestburg hits the road to scrimmage Newcastle Aug. 21.
