Bowie basketball teams lose early season games

The Bowie boy’s basketball team lost a tough game on Saturday against 4A Aubrey.
The Chaparrals beat the Jackrabbits 70-42 in a game where Bowie’s defense could not contain Aubrey.
The Jackrabbits offense had a rough game in their first win of the season earlier in the week against Hirschi, but the defense carried them in that game.
That did not happen on Saturday.
The Chaparrals scored 19 points in the first quarter and then 17 in the second to get out to a lead.
With Bowie scoring nine in the first quarter before rebounding with 15 in the second quarter thanks to a couple of made 3-pointers, the score was 36-24 at halftime.
Any thought of the Jackrabbits making a second half comeback was dashed when Aubrey came out of halftime on fire. The Chaparrals scored 21 points while Bowie was held to just seven points as the lead continued to grow and grow.
The fourth quarter was more competitive, but it did little for the Jackrabbits to make up its deficit.
Bowie was overmatched as Aubrey took the win 70-42.
Boston Farris led the team with 18 points and four made 3-pointers. Andrew Sandhoff joined him in double-figures with 15 points.
It was a tough matchup going against the bigger 4A school and Coach Ryan Dykes would have liked his team to have competed better, but it did not happen.
With Dykes still getting used to his mostly inexperienced team, hopefully these types of games pay off down the line into something positive.
Bowie is next scheduled to play at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 28 at Burkburnett.
Bowie girls
The Bowie Lady Rabbits lost a close game at home on Friday night against Burkburnett.
The Lady Bulldogs held on to win 56-52 against a Lady Rabbit team playing from behind for the whole game, but made a good charge in the second half.
Bowie was trying to bounce back from a bad road loss at Ponder and knew it had another challenge playing a 4A Burkburnett that is usually at worse a challenge during most seasons.
The Lady Bulldogs got out to a 20-12 lead after the first quarter. With the next two quarters mostly even, the Lady Rabbits trailed 47-38 heading into the final period.
Bowie got close, but ultimately could not make the shots at the end to get it done despite the defense holding Burkburnett to single digits in the fourth quarter.
The Lady Bulldogs won 56-52.
Kayleigh Crow led the team with 17 points while Ziba Robbins was second with 15 points.
It was a tough loss, but it showed Bowie fighting back after a rough start which can give hope in future games the team can turn negative situations around.
The Lady Rabbits are next scheduled to play at the Breckenridge Lions Club tournament on Nov. 30-Dec. 2.

Saint Jo volleyball opens with victory
In its first match since last year’s state semifinal appearance, Saint Jo hosted Bryson Aug. 11 and took a 25-13, 25-12, 25-21 win over the Cowgirls.
The Lady Panthers lost some talent to graduation but have five seniors ready to have a successful season. Savannah Hil, one of the five, got Saint Jo rolling offensively with a four-point serving string, including a pair of aces. Abby Carter’s kill and Kamron Skidmore’s block helped put the Lady Panthers up 5-2 in game one.
Hadleigh Moore added a four-point string of her own to extend the lead to 10-3. Tatum Morman’s pair, helped by a Hill kill, gave Saint Jo a 14-5 lead. Bryson got within five before a Hill 3-pointer, with help by a Carter kill, put the lead back at 18-10.
After an Olivia Johnson kill broke serve, Jordyn O’Neal served up the final five points, with Johnson providing a kill to move things along.

Lady Indian VB falls in semis at Brock Tourney
Despite being the smallest school in the Brock varsity classic volleyball tournament, the Lady Indians finished 4th out of the eight teams there.
After losing to the host team in its first pool play match Aug. 14 18-25, 14-25 and also to Class 3A Wall 12-25, 8-25, Nocona rebounded to close out pool play with a 20-25, 25-23, 25-20 win over Christoval. Sy Parker had 16 kills and 7 blocks in the three matches. Raylea Bowles had 12 kills, 17 digs and served up three aces. Maddyn Bowles had seven kills and 14 digs while Paige Davis had seven kills and 15 digs. Baylee Thomas added 11 digs.
From the setter spot, Kasi Castro had 20 assists, served up five aces and contributed 14 digs. Leah Meekins added 18 assists and six digs during the three matches.
To open Saturday’s bracket play, the Lady Indians posted a 25-18, 18-25, 26-24, 25-19 win over Fort Worth Christian. Castro staked Nocona to a 2-0 lead in game one. Kills by Parker set up pairs of points from Raylea Bowles and Leah Meekins helped Nocona negate an early deficit and take a 10-9 lead.

Area teams hit gridiron for scrimmages
County football teams had their first scrimmage of the season Aug. 14 with mixed results.
Forestburg hosted Azle Christian and Victory Christian. Under a new system with new head coach Cori Hayes, the Longhorns looked pretty good in the coach’s eye.
“The first team looked good,” Hayes explained. “Overall we need to work on our pace and blocking assignments and blocking assignments. Overall we looked good for the new regime.”
Forestburg hits the road to scrimmage Newcastle Aug. 21.
