Saint Jo seniors Payzlie Cervantes and Aubrey Morman block a tip at the net.

Saint Jo vs Bellevue
The Saint Jo Lady Panthers had a happy senior night on Tuesday playing their final regular season match against Bellevue.
The Lady Panthers won 3-0 against the Lady Eagles to officially secure another district title.
Saint Jo came into the match with a lot of emotion. The team sports six seniors, with five who have been on varsity since freshman year and all six since sophomore year.
The Lady Panthers already had the district title wrapped up with no losses in the five previous matches.
Bellevue came into the match with nothing to lose in its final match of the season. The Lady Eagles are going to just miss the playoffs, but still were playing with pride as they nearly upset district runner-up Prairie Valley in the previous match in five sets. They were hoping they could push an unsuspecting, but sentimental Saint Jo team the same way.
The first set proved to be the most competitive. The Lady Panthers were playing all of their seniors at the start which mucked up their typical rotations, but they knew they could weather it.
Saint Jo slowly pulled away, but the Lady Eagles were able to score some points on the margins to make the final score 25-17.
After the first set, the Lady Panthers rotations were a bit more normal and they were more into the match. Good serves and net play allowed them to get out to a huge early lead 12-3 and Bellevue could not recover. Saint Jo won 25-12.
It was the same story in set three. The Lady Panthers led 14-6 and kept up that pace as they won 25-11 to secure the victory 3-0.

Nocona
The Nocona Lady Indians officially wrapped up their co-district championship on Tuesday at Petrolia.
The Lady Indians won in straight sets 3-0 against the Lady Pirates as they head into the playoffs on cloud nine.
Nocona was coming into the game off its biggest win of the season, beating Windthorst at home on senior night to tie the Lady Trojans at the top of the district standings. With the two teams going into different divisions in the playoffs, there would be no need for the teams to play again for the district title and first seed like they would in the past.
Still, for Nocona to get a gold ball for a shared district title, the Lady Indians would have to beat Petrolia.
Nocona took care of the Lady Pirates, with two of the sets being relatively competitive. The set scores were 25-18, 25-13 and 25-20.

Prairie Valley vs Forestburg
The Prairie Valley Lady Bulldogs had a happy senior night on Tuesday with a win against Forestburg.
The Lady Bulldogs won in straight sets 3-0 to secure district runner-up while the Lady Horns finished third.
Prairie Valley had gotten a scare in its previous match at Bellevue, nearly letting the Lady Eagles come back as it went to five sets.
Forestburg was motivated because a win would set up a chance for a play-in game later this week for second place and a better playoff seed.
The Lady Bulldogs came to play and won the first two sets with relative ease 25-14 and 25-11. The Lady Horns made a good push in set three, but still Prairie Valley was able to close the set to win 25-20 and the match 3-0.

Norwood new Bowie boys hoop coach

Published

on

Landry Norwood has agreed to become the new Head Boys Basketball Coach for Bowie High.

Norwood grew up in Paradise, playing a number of sports for the Panthers during his high school career. With a number of family members still in the area and the position coming open, Norwood applied and was hired.

“I know the tradition up here,” Norwood said. “I was glad (Athletic Director and Head Football) Coach Tyler Price felt he could put his trust in me.”

Bowie’s varsity went 2-10 last year, both wins coming against Vernon. Norwood  spent five years as an assistant in Lipan before spending the next four years at Llano, three years as head coach. He said his last two years in Llano were rough after graduation of nine seniors his first year and a 26-7 squad.

Nocona softball falls to Archer City

Published

Nocona came into game two of its Class 2A Division I bi-district series with Archer City looking to rebound from a 17-0 loss in game one.

The Lady Indians took a quick lead but the Lady ‘Cats had too much in the tank and knocked Nocona out of the playoffs courtesy of a 13-3, five-inning victory winning the best of three series, 2-0.

Kylea Wallace reached base on a second baseman’s error. With one out, M’leigha Franklin took a pitch over the wall in left field for a home run, igniting the Lady Indian crowd with a 2-0 lead.

Archer City prevented further damage by retiring the next two hitters. The Lady ‘Cats struck in the bottom of the inning for seven runs.

Lady Rabbits win bi-district

Published

Culture. It’s a beautiful word.

Bowie Softball Coach Griffin Fields has been trying to install a positive, winning culture since taking over the job. For the first time since 2019, the Lady Rabbits qualified for the postseason, facing District 8 top seed Early in the bi-district round.

After beating the Lady ‘Horns 9-8 in game one of the best-of-three series April 23, Early came back and evened the series less than 24 hours later, 15-0. The Lady Rabbits used the aforementioned culture and got out to a quick lead in game three.

Bowie was then forced to come from behind for the second straight night. Kinley Baker, who had the game winning RBI in game one, came through again in game three and broke a 6-all tie with a single to lift the Lady Rabbits to a 9-6 victory in the finale.
