Softball season starts for Bowie, Nocona
Bowie
The Bowie Lady Rabbits softball team started their season last week.
The official games that were on the team’s GameChanger app were a loss to Mineral Wells 17-5 on Saturday and a loss to Ponder 10-1 on Monday.
The Lady Rabbits are led by a new coach this year, Griffin Fields and the young group hopes to grow together after struggling last year.
Playing the Lady Rams, Bowie found itself down 10-0 after two and half innings, but bounced back with three runs. Mineral Wells scored four and three runs in the next two innings.
The Lady Rabbits added two more before the game was called after five innings. The Lady Rams won 17-5.
Payton Holt led the team with four RBIs and two hits. The team had five hits overall, but drew nine walks.
Unfortunately, the team gave up 17 hits and committed eight fielding errors.
The defense was better on Monday in Bowie’s game against Ponder at home, but unfortunately, the Lady Rabbits could not get their bats to come alive.
The Lady Lions scored two runs in the second inning, three runs in the fourth inning and four in the fifth inning to take a 9-0 lead.
Bowie got on the board when Rhyan Carle scored on a fielding error to cut the lead to 9-1.
Ponder scored one run in the sixth inning which made the final 10-1.
Serenity Klump led the team with two hits and also drew two walks. The team finished with four hits and drew six walks.
On the mound, Klump struck out five and walked five and gave up seven hits and allowed two earned runs. The team committed seven fielding errors.
Nocona
The Nocona Lady Indians struggled in their first week of the season, which included games played at the Fort Worth Castleberry Tournament.
The Lady Indians went 1-5 overall as the young team tries to find their footing with new Coach Jeff Hill.
Nocona’s first official game was on Feb. 11 at Petrolia. The game went four innings and the Lady Pirates won 14-2. Evelyn Marquez and Kylea Wallace both drove in one run each to lead the team.
Nocona then played in its first tournament of the season, playing four games between Friday and Saturday.
The Lady Indians started the tournament on a good note against Millsap, going up 5-0. In the bottom of the second inning, the Lady Bulldogs scored eight innings to take the lead. Millsap added one more run in the third inning before the game was called, the final score being 9-5.
Tinley Cable led the team with two hits and two RBIs. Skye Kirby and Ma’leigha Franklin each drove in one run each as well. Wallace struck out five batters and had two earned runs on the mound.
The second game of the first day was against Lake Worth. The Lady Frogs scored five runs in the first inning and six in the fourth inning to pull away and win 12-4 after three and half innings of play.
Gwyndelyn Forsyth led the team with two RBIs. Kirby and Marquez each drove in one more run as well.
The second day of the tournament was better and it showed in Nocona’s first game against Vandergrift. The Lady Indians jumped out and scored four runs in the first inning and led 7-0 after two and half innings of play.
Unfortunately, the Lady Vipers came alive and equaled the score in the bottom of the third inning, tying the game at 7-7.
Nocona’s offense could not answer in the fourth inning, but Vandergrift did, scoring a run to give the team the 8-7 win after the game was called.
The team drew 12 walks in the game. Franklin led the team with two RBIs while Feather Griffith, Ashlynn Brown and Kirby each drove in one run.
That heartbreaking loss seemed to propel Nocona into its next game to make sure it would not happen again.
Against Western Hills, the Lady Indians raced out to nine runs in the first inning and two in the second inning. The Lady Cougars were keeping pace, trailing only 11-9 after the first two innings.
Then Nocona added to its lead with five runs in the third inning.
The defense coming through with a shut out third inning put the game away as the Lady Indians won 16-9, ending their tournament on a bright note.
Marquez led the team with three hits and four RBIs, along with a double and home run. Wallace also drove in four runs and hits triple. Kaitlyn Tiffner, Franklin and Brown each drove in one run as well to add to the total.
On the mound, Wallace struck out five batters, gave up two hits and allowed three earned runs.
Nocona started this week with a game hosting Seymour on Monday and it was a shootout that resembled a football score the Lady Indians were able to win in dramatic fashion.
Nocona led 9-2 after two innings and 13-4 after three. The Lady Panthers reeled off 10 runs in the next two innings, but the Lady Indians scored at a similar pace and led 20-14 heading into the sixth inning.
Seymour then scored 10 runs to take its first lead since the first inning, but Nocona answered back with seven runs to retake the lead 27-24 heading into the seventh inning.
The Lady Panthers again retook the lead, scoring 10 runs for the second straight inning and leading 34-27. Thankfully, the Lady Indian bats and more importantly eyes since they took 40 walks during the game, were alive and Nocona scored eight runs.
The winning run came through on a walk drawn from Brown to give the Lady Indians the 35-34 win.
Franklin led the team with five RBIs. Tiffner, Kirby, Brown and Forsyth each drove in four as well. The team only had 12 hits in the shootout since so many runs came through by drawing walks.
