GOLF NOTEBOOK: Locals fare well at Oil Belt event
Three local golfers earned first place in various flights at the Oil Belt Senior Men’s Association event at Twisted Oaks on May 18-19.
This was an individual stroke play, low net formatted tournament.
There were 76 senior golfers competing in five flights.
Ron Everitt from Twisted Oaks scored a 64 in the “A” flight to win it. Andy Duke was third in the same flight with a 67. Ken Rhoades fired a 70 for fifth place.
Mike Ellis carded a 71 in the “C” flight and Dennis Gregory and Jet Tomlinson a 73 in the same flight.
Bubba Applewhite of Twisted Oaks won the “D” flight with a 62, and fellow course member Delbert Woolf garnered the “E” flight with a 67.
The Oil Belt senior tour will return to Twisted Oaks on Aug. 31.
Golf scramble winners named
The team comprised of Chris Wolsey, Chase Wolsey and Scott Deweber won the latest Tuesday scramble on May 26 at Twisted Oaks.
The trio fired an 18.
Art Ferguson, Jim Wright, Jim Terry and Jon Ward won a tie-breaker for second place.
Chase Duke, Zack Ingram and Al Segura were third. Both of these teams carded 19s.
Wright won closest-to-the-pin honors on Hole No. 3, and Art Ferguson on No. 9.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
