FISHING: High school anglers set for tourney June 27-28
The Bass Federation and Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) are teaming up to present the Texas State High School Fishing Open.
The tournament is open to any high school fishing teams, including ours from Bowie.
The event will be at Jackson Hill Marina in Broaddus by the Sam Rayburn Reservoir. This is a two-day tournament on June 27-28 with takeoff at 6 a.m. on both days.
This is a two-person team event for students from seventh- through 12th-grade.
Registration for anglers and their boat captain, who will provide the competition vessel, is online at: highschoolfishing.org.
The weigh-in will take place at Cassels-Boykin in Zavalla, scheduled for 2 p.m. both days. The take-off and weigh-in are open to the public.
Teams may register until the morning of the event.
The top-3 teams from each of the six nationwide fishing opens will advance to the conference championship, along with the top 10 percent from each of the TBF/FLW state championships.
The top 10 percent each conference championship field then will advance to the national championship, coinciding with the TBF National Championship and an FLW tour stop in the spring of 2016.
The high school fishing national champions will each receive a $5,000 scholarship to the school of their choosing.
For information, call TBF National Youth Director Mark Gintert at 1-580-716-4251.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
