COLLEGE SPORTS: Martinez an All-American again
Former Bowie High School standout cross country and track and field performer Sam Martinez has been named an all All-American again.
Martinez, currently attending Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, recorded a third-place performance in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on May 23 at the NCAA Division III track and field championships in Canton, N.Y.
Seeded ninth coming into the race, Martinez recorded a time of 10 minutes, 39.82 seconds and she clocked her best-ever split of 1:20.54.
Martinez was just 0.13 off the school record as the fastest qualifier during the preliminary run on May 21.
She was in the top-five the entire steeplechase, moving up to fourth midway through the race, and she kicked at the end to overtake Willamette (Ore.) athlete Michaela Freeby for third.
Martinez is just the third Ram in Cornell history to earn indoor and outdoor All-American status in the same season. She was also the first cross country All-American in school history.
Cornell finished with 21 points at the meet, which placed the Rams 10th overall. This was the school’s highest-ever team finish at the national competition.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
