OUTDOORS NOTEBOOK: Go paddling during July
Paddling is the official activity of the month, so says the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
There are plenty of waterways in Texas, and some are designated as Texas Paddling Trails. There are more than 60 of these trails in the state.
In our area, there are several paddling trails to choose from, including the Trinity, Joe Pool Lake, Walnut Creek, Lake Arlington and River Legacy Parks. Most of these trails are on the Trinity River.
Consult specific river flow information at the following website: www.tpwd.texas.tx.us/landwater/water/habitats/rivers/flow.
Cedar Hill, Eisenhower State Park in Denison, Lake Mineral Wells and Possum Kingdom State Parks also all offer paddling.
Cedar Hill offers single and two-person kayaks from March through October.
At Eisenhower, pontoon boats are available for rent.
There are canoes, kayaks and rowboats for rent at Mineral Wells.
Non-motorized boats, canoes and rowboats are available from Possum Kingdom.
Call the Texas state park of your choice for current water levels and conditions. Some levels don’t change much despite drought conditions.
The TPWD offers a canoe paddling video at its site. There also are brochures titled Canoeing 101 and Kayaking 101.
Paddlers should keep in mind bodies of water are different from swimming pools, and warrant increased attention. Read more in the mid-week Bowie News.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
