WASHER PITCHING: Record-setting time

It’s finally official.
After nearly a year of waiting, the Guinness World Records website stated the “Put Yo Money Where Yo Mouth Is” washer pitching tournament is the current record holder.
During the 2014 event, there were 486 participants from all over that descended on Joe Wheeler Park in Decatur. There were entrants from as far away as Florida and Canada.
Those 486 participants were broken down into 243 two-person teams for this single-elimination formatted event.
“It was good to get this news prior to our next washer tournament this year,” said Carey Williams, the tournament organizer. “It’s been a neat experience for us, to see the community pull together.”
Williams reported there were washer pitchers of all ages, ranging from as young as six years old to 90 years old.
Because of a glitch with electronic equipment, data ranging from pitchers’ names to tournament scores had to be entered manually.
“There was a lot of work,” Williams said.
Amanda Williams, Carey’s wife, had been constantly monitoring the Guinness web site, and it kept reading “pending” until July 1.
Williams said an official certificate of authenticity has been mailed from Guinness world headquarters in England.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.

Botard new BHS girls BB coach
After some coaching time in East Texas, Bret Botard will be the new girl’s basketball coach at Bowie.
Botard said it’s a chance to work with Bowie Athletic Director Tyler Price once again. Price was Botard’s assistant when he coached at Nocona.
“I wanted to get back into the area,” Botard said. “It’s a good community.”
Botard graduated high school in 1995 from Del Valle High School, outside Austin, and went to Texas Tech. He started his coaching career in Lubbock followed by returning to his alma mater where he was an assistant for his high school coach.
