LOCAL GOLF: Junior tour fills void
By ERIC VICCARO

There was a perceived void for summer junior golf in this part of north Texas.
So, last year, Terry McCutchen created the North Texas Junior Golf Tour, and the amount of youngsters playing golf has increased.
McCutchen said there are junior tours in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex as well as the Abilene area, but there weren’t any tournaments for youth in Montague, Wise and Parker Counties.
“I’m excited,” said McCutchen, who has experience coaching golf from his time in the Paradise Independent School District. “It gets kids on the golf course, even beginners. It’s fun to watch them compete.”
McCutchen estimates there are 60 golfers competing this summer, which is a greater number than the number of participants during the 2014 tour.
This has been a busy week for the tour, which included stops at Holliday Hills in Mineral Wells on Monday and then Twisted Oaks Golf Club near Amon G. Carter Lake on Wednesday.
There are three tournaments left, at Jacksboro, Graham and the season’s tour championship set for Aug. 3 at Runaway Bay.
“It’s personally rewarding to see the kids play,” McCutchen said. “I get as much fun out of this as the kids do. Golf is a lifetime sport.
“We have medals for each tournament,” he continued. “We’ll give away T-shirts to the winners of each age group at the tour championship. And we’ll have long drive and putting contests.” Read more in the weekend Bowie News.

SJ’s Gooch new girl’s basketball coach
New Saint Jo Girl’s Basketball Coach Grant Gooch isn’t completely unfamiliar with the area.
“We went to Muenster quite a bit when I was a kid,” Gooch, who will be going into his 20th year as a coach, said. “We’d load up the cooler from the meat markets. It’s good to be back.”
Gooch worked with Saint Jo Athletic Director CJ Hantz when the pair were in Throckmorton. Gooch comes to town from Menard where he spent three years at the West Texas school.
Gooch says coaching and education kind of come naturally to him.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys
New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.
“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”
McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.
McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.
