HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Terry competes in all-star hoops game

Published

on

Former Bellevue High School standout Broc Terry played in the Texas 6-Man Coaches Association boys’ all-star basketball game on Saturday.
Terry scored two points as the East suffered a 68-63 loss to the West at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on the Midwestern State University campus in Wichita Falls.
The District 1A-21 most valuable player also helped the East with three steals and one assist during his playing time.
The East has not defeated West since 2007, when the all-star game took place in Lubbock.
East’s Brady Chamberlain made a layup to forge a 60-all tie with 1 minute, 57 seconds left to play, but the West canned eight free throws to prevail.
Carlos Espino, from state Conference 1A champion Texline, tallied 15 points and converted three 3-pointers to claim most valuable player honors.
Brady Chamberlain paced the East with 16 points.
This marked the second straight year Bellevue was represented in the all-star game, with Brandt Cassetty playing 2014.

Published

on

New Saint Jo Girl’s Basketball Coach Grant Gooch isn’t completely unfamiliar with the area.

“We went to Muenster quite a bit when I was a kid,” Gooch, who will be going into his 20th year as a coach, said. “We’d load up the cooler from the meat markets. It’s good to be back.”

Gooch worked with Saint Jo Athletic Director CJ Hantz when the pair were in Throckmorton. Gooch comes to town from Menard where he spent three years at the West Texas school.

Gooch says coaching and education kind of come naturally to him.

McLennan to coach Saint Jo boys

Published

on

New Saint Jo Boy’s Basketball Coach Terry McLennan said the school’s family atmosphere is what prompted him to join the Panther family.

“This is an opportunity to be an important program but also part of a great community,” McLennan said. “I’ve been looking to get back to a small town environment like the one I grew up in and played ball and this should do that.”

McLennan played basketball in Hubbard outside of Waco. McLennan comes to town after being the assistant girl’s basketball coach in Grand Prairie.

McLennan contends he’s a defensive style of coach but says his team will focus on intensity.
