The Forestburg High School volleyball team overcame a slow start to beat Roxton in four sets during a Conference 1A area match on Saturday at Gainesville High School.
The Lady Horns won by scores of 15-25, 25-15, 25-17 and 25-17.
Forestburg improved to 19-15 overall with the victory – and bi-district and area trophies in tow – before Tuesday’s regional quarterfinal against Bryson at Chico High School.
Kaylee Choate distributed 21 assists, served up a team-best six aces and scooped up a Lady Horn high six digs in a stellar performance.
“Roxton was tipping more than swinging, and we didn’t think they were going to tip that much when we saw them in warm-ups,” said Forestburg head coach Cori Hayes.
“So, after the first set, we dropped back and played more defense,” Hayes said. “We made great adjustments after the first set to come out and win the rest.”
Hayes said he hopes the Lady Horns play more their style in the match versus Bryson.
The coach added the girls are feeding off the success the boys are having in football – which won the District 12-1A-II title on Saturday.
“Everybody’s bought in,” he said. “Everyone is doing great, and the atmosphere at the high school is amazing.”
This marked the first area championship in volleyball in Forestburg’s history.
Roxton won the first 11 of 13 points in the first set, and built its lead to as many as 13 points at 21-8 before winning the opener by 10.
Forestburg garnered seven of the first nine points in the second set before Roxton closed within 8-7. Read more in the mid-week Bowie News.

Nocona got its new press box into place this week at Jack Crane Stadium. The old press box, which was in place for more than 60 years, was taken out in early June and moved to Indian Valley Raceway. The new press box was by the Southern Bleacher Company out of Graham. Athletic Director Black Crutsinger said they looked at a lot of press boxes and decided they liked the one at Lindsay High School and went with that model. Sean Hutson operated the crane from the Hurd Crane Service that put the press box up for Nocona.

In the eight-and-under division, Whitley Goins won the top cowgirl and Trell Carpenter won top cowboy. Goins got the fastest times in barrel racing, flags and mystery event. Carpenter got the fastest time in poles and goats.
